Jewish Dating Traditions - Old Fashioned?
Jewish people are considered an ethno-religious society. Their beliefs, customs, and way of life are guided by Judaism. As the Jewish lifestyle was greatly influenced by Old Testament Bible, it is perhaps primarily in contrast with the modern principle of today’s young people. The young people of today can freely date anybody they want, and choose any dating activities they feel comfortable with.
In the olden times, Jewish male and female stay in different places and were not allowed to see and meet each other constantly. They are kept apart until someone introduces them to each other. A matchmaker arranges the marriage by talking both parents of the parties involved. When they agree to each other, wedding plans take place.
Usually men and women stay in different temples to pray. When they are wed in the same temple, the husband and wife are still kept apart until the ceremony ended. After the ritual is done it is only the time that they can embrace each other. Then the celebration with the whole family and relatives follow,
No doubt, the modern times will indeed find it strange, abnormal and funny. Both sexes are already exposed to their opposite sex even at a young age and enjoy activities together. Jewish tradition will not be able to do this. Nonetheless, there are families who still practice the old lifestyle.
Jewish mothers play a significant role in their families. They are greatly responsible on their sons’ and daughters’ future. It is the mothers’ concern to make their children happy even when it comes to dating somebody.
There may be a lot of Jewish customs- from Hasidic, conservative Jews, to the modern ones. Each group has their own communities in the western world today. But all came from a common religious belief. The Jewish people are also known to be close knit in their rights and respect. These different groups expectedly have their own bonds within themselves. This principle allows their children to know a kind of life only within their boundaries and not easily influenced by the general system of the world.
There are a lot of rigid rules to follow when it comes to dating. Jewish singles are required to establish serious romantic relationships of people with the same faith. Their relationships are likely to succeed, since they have the same interests, view in life, and especially the same religious practices.
They also have these regular observations of religious holidays- even daily for that matter. Performing them consistently and constantly satisfy some religious requirements. Expectedly, an outsider or a non-Jewish partner might feel out of place doing something he or she was not used to growing up. Most especially if he or she is exposed to the whole big family.
Though today there may be changes as to forms and approaches to the traditional lifestyle in dating, but the core and main principles of establishing romantic relationships remain. Jewish singles and couples today will likely keep their strong family tradition believing that that is how they were called for. They may have adapted the modern style of meeting potential dates but they will still naturally look for their own kind.
